Before the course
Freya had received an Autism diagnosis the week before the course started, which they had opted to do privately due to the length of waiting lists. The child and their family were very new to the world of neurodivergence and were only just beginning to process what the diagnosis meant for them. Freya also had been on a very reduced timetable at school due to anxieties, often not attending school at all so her mother Tamzin was very keen for Freya to get some support at this time as they felt overwhelmed and, in their words, desperate for support.
During the course
Freya was quite shy to start with and according to their mother, had a lot of apprehension and anxiety about coming to the group. They seemed very quiet during the first session. As the weeks progressed, Freya came out of their shell more and more, and by the third session was answering questions and contributing to group discussions… and went back to school for the first time that term!
Freya seemed to get a lot from the content which was covered, as evidenced by their mother’s feedback to staff about a noticeable difference in their mood, as well as the evident change in their confidence to come into sessions and interact not only with staff, but other young people too. By the final session, Freya had formed a bond with another young person, who they played and laughed around together with during the free time at the end of the session.
Freya made excellent progress which we hope will continue at our Auticulate and A Team groups, which they have signed up for.
